American Peter Kassig was the most recent victim of the brutal beheadings of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants and his family released a statement saying the incident damaged them.

The ISIL militants on Sunday posted a video showing another masked militant towering over the severed head of a man who was identified as Peter Kassig, a former U.S. Army Ranger who later become an aid worker. ISIL militants seized him while he was delivering supplies to Syria in 2013.

Kassig's mother, Paula Kassig, said their hearts are battered but noted that they will mend.

"The world is broken but it will be healed in the end," she said. "And good will prevail as the one god of many names will prevail."

Paula recounted how their son witnessed and experienced realities in life in a way that is harsher than anyone in their family can imagine. She noted that her son did not let the darkness of the situation overwhelm him and that he is evidence that one person really makes a difference.

Meanwhile, Ed Kassig, Peter Kassig's father, asked people to pray for his son this evening at sunset as he has converted to Islam during his captivity. Kassig's father added that they should also pray for people in Syria and in Iraq and for people who are held against their will all over the world.

In addition, Kassig's father asked the public to grant their family privacy to give them time to grieve, mourn, cry and eventually forgive.

Kassig served in the U.S. Army under the 75th Ranger Regiment sector and was deployed to Iraq in 2007. He returned to the Middle East in 2012 after forming a relief group called Special Emergency Response and Assistance to help refugees from Syria.
