The number 6 ranked Stanford Cardinal just beat the Connecticut Huskies and ended their 47-game winning streak in an exciting overtime matchup, 88-86.

For more than seven years, the matchup between the Cardinals and the Huskies has been one of National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) premier matchups for women's basketball.

The rivalry has showcased dramatic and exciting games that have featured America's best women's players.

The marquee matchup series was renewed Monday night, where the Cardinals stepped in as a decided underdog against the two-time defending national champion. In addition, the Huskies have not lost in their past 47 games.

The Cardinals were up for the challenge though, as head coach Tara VanDerveer said playing against teams like the Huskies could transform their team from a good team to a great one.

The game was mostly a close one. However, in a rematch of last season's NCAA semi-finals, the Huskies did not look in prime condition.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis for instance, coming off a 30-point game, could not find her shot all night and was smothered by the defense of Karlie Samuelson.

The game went toe-to-toe. With the second period ending, Amber Orrange made a three-point shot with just 1.4 seconds in regulation to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Orrange made a go-ahead jumper with 1:38 left on the clock. This put the Cardinals up, 85-84.

After Orrange's basket, the smothering defense of the Cardinals took over. They put the pressure on the Huskies and forced their opponents into several poor shots, a 5-second violation, and even prevented the Huskies form making their final attempt.

UConn went 40-0 last season on their way to its second straight championship. This was the first time the Huskies lost since falling to Notre Dame in the 2013 conference tournament.

The Huskies are scheduled to head back to the East Coast for their home opener on Sunday against Creighton. The Cardinal, on the other hand, will host Texas on Thursday for their third straight home game.
