Animation studios face immense challenges in making 4K movies look amazing and laboriously creating perfectly detailed characters and scenes might ruin production schedules.

Ultra High Definition (UHD) is a high definition resolution developed mainly for consumer television at 4096 pixels. Current film resolution in 1080p HDTV format is viewed at 2K resolution at 24 frames per second.

UHD has twice the resolution of the 1080p format and requires twice the number of frames per second. In short, filmmakers have to double the time spent and work needed to make movies suitable for UHD.

4K resolution comes with finer details, realistic image depth and natural blending of colors. Pixels can't be seen and images look very realistic. To keep up with this new advance in animation, filmmakers are being challenged to make better films.

The biggest problem facing animators is the doubled number of frames needed for this format. This important factor in animation consumes a lot of time. Large gaps between frames won't look good with "the resolution of the future." Animated movie productions are also becoming a lot more expensive.

This November, Samsung sealed a deal with M-GO and launched a pay-per-view service that allows clients to stream movies in 4K resolution.

TimeScapes is the first 4K film in the world made available to the public. It features stunning slow-motion and timelapse shots of landscapes and wildlife in the American Southwest.
