Hemsworth has also been featured as the Formula One pro James Hunt in the Ron Howard film Rush and the Star Trek reboot.
Hemsworth's win was announced at the TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Hemsworth told Kimmel that he was particularly grateful for "for putting this together."
The actor's "sexiest man" honors enables him to join the ranks of equally-stunning hunks, including Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Patrick Swayze, Sean Connery, Ben Affleck, Channing Tatum and Adam Levine.
Fellow Aussie Mel Gibson was the first actor to be honored by People as the "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1985.
Hemsworth, 31, is now happily married to Fast and Furious 6 star Elsa Pataky. They have three children together.
His younger brother, Liam, has become an international superstar with his role in The Hunger Games.
In an interview with People, Chris said that being labeled as the sexiest man in the world "bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights" around the house and with his wife.
"I can just say to her, 'Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don't need to do the dishes anymore, I don't need to change nappies. I'm above that. I've made it now,'" he said.
