Fifa Submits Criminal Complaint on Possible World Cup Corruption

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) has just submitted a criminal complaint to the attorney general in Swizerland after a two-year investigation of possible corruption in the World Cup.

The complaint concerns certain individuals linked to awarding the hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.

The Fifa ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert preserves the notion that there is not enough evidence to question the entire bidding process.

The fact that Eckert maintained the bidding process couldn't be questioned raised several questions and criticisms. One came from Alexandra Wrage, a previous Fifa adviser.

Wrage resigned due to her belief that key proposals to change and reform the organisation have been watered down.

The proposals included: toughening up the process of deciding where the World Cup will be in the future and ensuring independent oversight of Fifa's powerful executive committee.

It also includes the bid to disclose how much president Sepp Blatter and other leading executives are paid, and ensuring integrity checks for future executives are carried out independently.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 live, Wrage said the action raises more questions than answers.

"The public are being asked to accept that there is enough evidence for a criminal complaint to be lodged in Switzerland, but there isn't enough to discredit the World Cup bid. That just doesn't seem to make any sense."

A week prior, Eckert just released a 42-page document that cleared Russia and Qatar of any supposed wrongdoing. This confirms their status as the 2018 and 2022 hosts respectively.

The same report was also handed to Michael Garcia, an American lawyer who spent two years investigating allegations of corruption. Needless to say, he had several criticisms on the document.

He said that he would be appealing to Fifa, as the document contained "numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations."
