Park Ji-sung decided to end his revolutionary career that paved the way for South Korea to have a remarkable World Cup semifinals run, as well as his impressive seven seasons with one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
The veteran midfielder from Manchester United told media Wednesday at the stadium named after him that he already retired from playing top-flight football. He said his only immediate plans include a couple of friendly matches in the latter part of this month, and a wedding in July.

The Korean football star played his final season on loan together with the PSV Eindhoven football club in the Dutch league. The 33-year-old Park stopped playing in the international football scene in 2011 after playing for South Korea for three World Cups, and declined requests to go back and help the team in Brazil 2014.
The aggressive midfielder followed South Korean national football team manager Guss Hiddink to the Eindhoven club after the 2002 World Cu. He then proceeded to become the first-ever South Korean player to make a mark in the Premier League after joining Manchester United.
Park won four titles in the Premier League and the 2008 Champions League with his stint at Manchester.
Park had been contemplating retiring since February this year over concerns that his knees might not work properly if he will play for another season.
He had suffered several knee injuries in the past, and had undergone surgeries on his right knee in 2003 and another one in 2007.
Looking back, Park said he has no regrets about how his career went, and that he already accomplished a lot during his time as a football player.
He had set the bar high for other Asian football players, including the record of being the first one to score goals at the World Cup.
Park and the PSV Eindhoven club are scheduled to have two friendly matches with South Korean clubs later in May.
