British Artist will Wear Oculus Rift for 28 Days; No Breaks

An artist from the United Kingdom plans to spend almost a month, 28 days to be exact, wearing the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in his room with no breaks.

Mark Farid will have a few helpers and will stay in a room with only a bed and a bathroom. His living space in London will be on display so people can see how he's doing. This set-up looks like an art gallery.

For the duration of the exhibition, Farid won't ever remove his headset. He'll do everything such as showering, eating and going to the toilet wearing the Oculus Rift headset.

Farid's experiment will try to figure out if people's identities are part of who they are or if it can be learned, developed or adapted depending on the situation.

Farid said he won't even feel like he's in confinement as the headset stimulates reality for him. Basically, he thinks the virtual world will appear authentic to him.

The project is called "Seeing I" and could be funded by Kickstarter. If and when the funding will be approved, Farid and his collaborators, John Ingle and Nimrod Vardi, will document the experiment.

There will be someone else in the room with Farid and he'll be wearing glasses that will capture audio and video during the experiment. This man is called "The Other" and he'll be able to see anything seen by Farid.

Farid won't know who The Other will be. This is because Farid wants the stranger to live his life as normally as possible.

"I want to know if it's possible to lose the sense of myself. Maybe I'm not who I thought I am. My identity can be shaped into whatever I like," said Farid.
