‘Lammily’, The Imperfect Barbie, Proves Average is Beautiful

Lammily, a doll with all the 'imperfections' that beset women, is going on sale online at US$25. It was designed by Nickolay Lamm based on his concept of a 19-year-old woman who is occasionally saddled with such beauty issues as acne, cellulite, and a wide waistline.

Lamm, an artist from Pittsburgh, said his doll shatters the myths and unrealistic beauty standards that the perfect Barbie has perpetuated all these years.  He wanted to offer a 'normal' Barbie as the new epitome of beauty.

Lamm told Salon that he noticed how disproportionate the other dolls were and thought that a realistic sized doll should be sold in the market.

The 11-inch doll is now available on Lammily.com and it comes dressed in a denim shirt, short and sneakers. Although a variety of ensemble and other accessories can be bought separately. A pocket of Lammily Marks can also be bought and it consist of reusable stickers that looks like acne, freckles, moles, stitches, bruises and other imperfections that can be found in a human body.

A crowdfunding campaign was launched by Lamm in March where 13,621 backers ordered 19,000 dolls, or possibly more, amounting to $501,384.

Lammily dolls also come in different models each of which represent a regular 19 year old lady with just a light amount of makeup and bendable joints. Lamm plans to extend the range of the dolls from race to body type if ever the dolls are a success.

Through Lamms research, he was able to find out that the 36-18-33 measurement of Barbie dolls are quite unrealistic compared to the 32-31-33 measurement of a typical 19 year old with a height of 5ft 4". Lamm also stated that if Barbie was to exist as a real human being she would be suffering from anorexia considering that she will only weigh 110lbs with a BMI of 16.24 which is way below normal.

Lamm's purpose of creating this doll is to promote to children a more positive body image and show them that being average is not bad, being average is beautiful.
