Researchers at the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDeA Center) located at the University of Buffalo have developed a new, talking 3D map for the blind.

They created a comprehensive and very informational 3D map of their campus. When a person touches the form of a building on the map, he hears information about the building and directions to get to it, said Medical Design Technology.

The developers aim to help blind and visually impaired guests find their way around the university. The project was completed in collaboration with Touch Graphics Inc.

IDeA researcher Heamchand Subryan said the project is a way to help blind and visually impaired people understand the environment at the university.

"We're providing a level of information that allows them to navigate their environment easily, without help, which gives them a sense of independence," he said.

The 3D map at the Perkins School for the Blind makes use of conductive paint on the small scale buildings that detect pressure from a person's finger.

It's also equipped with a three button menu that enables a user to verbally browse all interesting destinations. The map even has special effects to highlight the university landmarks. When a bell tower is touched, it chimes, and if a fountain is touched, the sound of gurgling water can be heard.

Steve Landau, President of Touch Graphics Inc., says the touch responsive 3D model can also help blind and visually impaired pedestrians navigate certain classrooms or offices.

Meanwhile, Apple designed an interactive 3D map specifically designed for the iOS 8.

Whether you're driving or walking, this Apple map will help you find your way by speaking and giving you instructions turn by turn.

As you near a turn, the map will speak to give you directions so there's no need to look at the map. This option is especially helpful for drivers that need to keep their eyes on the road.

In case you missed a turn, the map will automatically give you a new route and inform you of your new estimated time of arrival.
