Skylock wants to add techie bicyclists to its client base with its new bike lock that can be controlled using a smartphone.

The company has launched a solar-powered bike lock that can be synced with both the cloud and the owner's smartphone, according to NBC News.

Most bicyclists are already well-acquainted with the U-lock. The Skylock replaces the ordinary lock-and-key mechanism with an electronic system that allows the user to unlock the device with their smartphone or by entering a numerical password.

The new kind of bike lock presents an additional safety feature for bicycles. Since there is no key to lose, the lock itself cannot be picked.

People are worried that the Kryptonite/Bic issue that happened in 2005 would also happen to them. Back then, a $1 pen was being used to pick a lock that cost $80.

Skylock has no keyhole but has a built-in accelerometer that alerts the bike owner of unusual occurrences. These include unusually hard jostling of the bike that will trigger a phone alert.

The sensors also function as a motion detector that determines when the owner suddenly stops while cycling. Once the phone determines that the rider and the smartphone went a certain distance beyond the lock and suddenly stopped, it asks for feedback from the owner. In the absence of an answer, an alert is sent to Emergency responders.

With the presence of Wi-Fi, the lock is linked to an account that users can set up for wireless unlocking. They can also share the bike or rent it out to others and just give them instructions for unlocking.

As for power, Skylock CTO Gerardo Barroeta is confident that the device's low-power system can run for about a week with just an hour of sunlight. He said he had spent a decade developing the said system.
