Mysterious Fireball Lights Up Skies over the Urals

For more than 10 seconds, a mysterious fireball illuminated the Ural region in Russia and amateur video of this mysterious explosion was posted in  YouTube.

Government officials have yet to issue an official explanation on the nature of this fireball, Yahoo News reported.

The particular video has no sound recording of the explosion. The Russia fireball appears to be bright orange in color. The explosion occurred 930 miles east of Moscow, near the Sverdlovsk region town of Rezh.

Numerous theories about the origin and nature of the fireball have been making the rounds in media circles. None of these theories have been confirmed as the cause of the explosion, however.

Local officials believe the fireball was actually caused by the explosion of ammunition stored by the Russian military. Military sources, however, denied any connection with the explosion.

Another theory is that the explosion may have been caused by a rocket blasting-off from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. Space officials denied any involvement in the explosion. They said no military exercise or activity was conducted in the affected area before and during the explosion.

Local astronomer Viktor Grokhovsky described the fireball as looking like "a falling bolide". Experts doubt if it was a meteorite explosion because meteorites entering and exploding inside the Earth's atmosphere have blinding white flashes. A bolide is an extremely dazzling meteor.

In February 2013, a 10,000 ton meteorite exploded over the skies of Chelyabinsk, another city in the Urals. The city turned the event into a tourist attraction.

Grokhovsky said this new fireball seemed to have occurred around 10 to 15 kilometers above the surface of the Earth. To confirm his claim, additional evidence like more videos and witness accounts will be needed.

It's during this time of year the Leonid meteor shower occurs over the Urals. So far, no one can confirm if the new fireball was part of the Leonid shower.

Meanwhile, NBC News quoted locals as saying an explosion of an old chemical plant situated outside Rezh was a possible cause of the fireball.
