An unidentified Chinese man bought a new car in coastal Shandong Province in eastern China-and paid for it with one-Yuan coins that weighed five tons.
The car, probably a Soueast, cost RMB 100,000 or US $16,000.
Press reports said the customer went to the car dealership and told the salesman he'd be paying for the car with coins and not with paper banknotes. Unwilling to lose a sure sale, the dealership agreed.
But then the car dealership staff had to count the coins. The loose change was packed inside a large number of plastic bags and paper cartons jammed into the customer's car.
The entire dealership staff pitched in and managed to count only 50,000 coins after hours of tedious work. They finally gave up and the management asked the customer to pay the balance with paper banknotes or with his credit card.
The dealership's bank also said it would only accept 2,000 yuan coins at a time.
The customer agreed to pay the balance with his credit card. News reports estimated the total weight of the RMB 100,000 coins at five tons.
The customer took a nap and watched a movie while waiting for the staff to finish counting his mountain of coins.
Soueast is a marque made by Soueast Motors based in Fujian Province It's a joint venture between China Motor Corporation, Fujian Motor Industry Group and Mitsubishi Motors. There are four vehicles under the Soueast marque.
