Call of Duty has become one of the most noticeable and relevant video game franchises in the past decade, creating a slower-style of first-person shooter.
Activision - the publisher of the Call of Duty franchise - has announced the overall sales of the franchise has surpassed $10 billion. There have been 14 Call of Duty games since its inception, back in 2003.

Call of Duty became a blockbuster success with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It was the first CoD game to feature a campaign outside of World War I and World War II and benefitted from a multiplayer that rewarded gamers with prestiges.
The road has not always been golden for Activision. Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts did not manage to outsell Modern Warfare 3. Ghosts has been deemed a failure by most gamers, who see minimal upgrades on multiplayer and a boring single-player campaign.
Call of Duty: Ghosts was also full of bugs and issues at launch. PC gamers especially took issue with various settings and features Infinity Ward had not added.
For the most part, Sledgehammer Games - developers of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - has released a more complete product. The game is set 40 years in the future, allowing the developers to create new futuristic guns and features.
Activision has not released numbers for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, but CEO Bobby Kotick, Advanced Warfare is "the biggest entertainment launch of 2014 in terms of revenue, surpassing all movie, music, and book launches this year" outpacing Watch Dogs, Guardians of the Galaxy and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is also the largest digital launch of any game in history, according to Activision's records PlayStation Store and Xbox Live.
Even though Call of Duty is one of the largest franchises in terms of revenue, Mari and Final Fantasy beat Call of Duty in overall sales and in sales-per-launch Grand Theft Auto and The Sims come out ahead.
