Mother Admits Abandoning Baby In Drain

A mother has admitted that she abandoned her baby in a drain in Sydney pressing that she thought it would kill the kid while officials believe that the child had been in it for almost five days, according to court documents released.

The woman has then been charged with attempted murder by the court handling the case. The 20-year-old mother from Quakers Hill, an Australian suburb, was charged overnight and had spent the entire evening in the custody of police officials. The woman, however, failed to appear for her hearing on Sunday.

She was reportedly taken to Blacktown Hospital with a police escort and she has not applied for a bail because she was refused by the court to do such.

The baby was allegedly a newborn and was left in the drain possibly on Tuesday just a day after he was born. If the timeline will be proven true, it means that the baby survived at least five days of being in the said drain, which is near the M7 cycle path located in Sydney.

The baby was found by a passing cyclist and his daughter on Sunday at around 7:30 in the morning after they heard a baby crying from the hole in the drain.

A group of people were then alerted of the situation and they helped the police officials called on the scene to lift the 200-kilogram concrete top of the drain. The baby was seen lying 2.4 meters below.

The baby was said to have its umbilical cord cut and wrapped in a hospital-issued blanked. Police officials pressed that the baby might have not survived if it has not been discovered just in time by the cyclist. They pressed that the temperature was really hot and that might have put the baby in a more serious danger.

The baby has then been rushed to Westmead Children's Hospital and he reportedly suffered from dehydration, malnutrition, and alleged internal injuries due to the height of the drop. The baby is said to be stable now and is under the care of the Family and Community Services Minister.

The mother is said to be appearing via a video conference before the court on Friday.
