Twelve-year-old Tamir Rice died of a gunshot wound on his torso, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office disclosed in a report released on Monday.

The gunshot wound injured major vessels, intestines, and the boy's pelvis. Given these information, the medical examiner's office said his death is a homicide, reports Cleveland.com.

He died on Sunday morning at the MetroHealth Medical Center.

Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said that the toy gun that Tamir had looks like a semi-automatic pistol and its orange safety indicator, usually found on a gun's muzzle, was removed.

On Saturday afternoon, a male caller informed 911 that a young man had a gun while playing outside a fun center in Cleveland, but the caller also said it could be a fake or toy gun only. Despite the information, the two Cleveland officers who responded to the 911 call fired two shots.

However, Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Association, said the two cops who responded were not informed by 911 that the boy was possibly carrying a toy gun only, BBC reports.

The caller said he saw the boy pointing the pistol at everyone, which scared park visitors. That replica gun looked like a semiautomatic pistol, according to Jennifer Ciaccia, spokeswoman of Cleveland's Division of Police Investigators.

Tomba added that Tamir didn't threaten the responding cops or point the fake gun at them. There was neither a verbal exchange nor a confrontation.

George Henderson, Tamir's father, said that rather than use real guns, the police should have used a Taser on his son to subdue him.

He described his son as a respectful person who "minded his elders," and found it mysterious that Tamir reportedly did not follow the officers' command to raise his hands, which eventually cost the boy his life.
