Sony Computer Entertainment America will issue partial refunds to buyers of the handheld gaming console, PlayStation Vita, due to its misleading claims.
"Sony deceived consumers by falsely advertising the PlayStation Vita's 'game-changing' features" after the console was launched three years ago, according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

During the launch of the product in early 2012, Sony's ads claimed PS Vita has the capability to "play games stored remotely on PlayStation 3 consoles, users could save a game on their PS3 and use the console to pick up where they left off, and they could use the 3G version of the Vita to engage in live, multiplayer gaming through a 3G network."
"Each of these claims was misleading," said the FTC.
The console wasn't designed to deliver the features stated on the ad campaign. Vita owners "cannot easily access their PS3 games on the PS Vita" while "most PS3 games are not remote playable on the PS Vita."
Sony reached a settlement with the FTC over these false advertising claims. Early adopters that bought the PS Vita console before June 1, 2012 will be eligible for either a US$25 cash or credit refund or a US$50 merchandise voucher from Sony, ABC News reported.
The tech giant will contact buyers about the refunds or vouchers via email once the agreement is finalized.
FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Jessica Rich said "the agency won't hesitate to have the consumer's back against companies making deceiving claims about their products."
"Companies need to be reminded that if they make product promises to consumers they must deliver on those pledges," Rich added.
