The National Football League's Washington Redskins are planning on benching quarterback superstar Robert Griffin III this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts in favour of backup Colt McCoy, a team source says.

While Griffin is not part of any immediate plan for the Redskins, another source says that he is still a significant part of the team's long-term plan.

For the first time since the Redskins surrendered three first-round picks and one second-round pick for the right to draft Griffin, the team will finally have their full allotment of picks in addition to room under the salary cap.

This situation is much like a reset button being hit by the Redskins, as they have high hopes for the coming offseason.

Apart from new players though, the Redskins are also fully committed to Griffin, as seen when they hired Head Coach Jay Gruden.

Gruden has done amazing work with quarterbacks. The team is convinced that with coaching, cash, and patience, Griffin can be turned back into the player who won the Heisman Trophy and Offensive Rookie of the Year award in back-to-back seasons.

Now though, he is far from the player that got him drafted first in the NFL.

Griffin is just coming off his most challenging NFL game against San Francisco. He was battered and pressured in the pocket, taking away the time he needs to throw the ball. The Redskins lost 17-13 to the 49ers that game.

As a rookie, Griffin threw for 3,200 yards and rushed for 815. He led the Redskins to win their first NFC East title since 1999.

However, since then, he has dealt with major knee surgery, a fractured relationship with his first coach, Mike Shanahan, and questions about his leadership as well.

Gruden's current concern though is his development on the field.

Griffin has been sacked 16 times overall since his return. The coaches viewed that in part as a function of his inability to develop as a pocket passer.
