Eventually, the 68-year-old singer-actress called herself "a reformed old whore" in a post she made on Twitter late Tuesday.
"About my screed on @ArianaGrande , all I can say is, 'Spoken like a reformed old whore! She does have a beautiful voice, on a couch or off,'" the three-time Grammy winner wrote.
Midler's tweet referred to the interview she made with The Telegraph, where discussed about the pornification of pop, slamming the likes of Grande and the explicit nature of pop music.
"It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous. I mean, it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it. I wish they'd stop," she said.
"Trust your talent," she continued.
"You don't have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead. You really don't."
Before her Twitter post, Arianna Grande made a clever retort against the pop diva via her Twitter.
She posted a photo showing a young Divine Miss M in skimpy bikini and dancing.
"Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgment!," wrote Grande. "I'm not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!!! always a fan no matter what my love," she wrote.
Grande's hits include "The Way," "Problem" and "Break Free."
Midler's credentials, meanwhile, include a successful stint on Broadway, hits, like "The Rose," "Wind Beneath My Wings," and "From a Distance," and successful films including The Rose and Beaches.
