(Photo : Microsoft) In an attempt to compete with Android low-end tablets, some Windows 8.1 tablets are available for just $100.
Microsoft tried to do a lot with Windows 8, making the operating system available for high and low-end users, on traditional PCs, laptops and tablets.
Even though the first few years didn't work out, Windows 8.1, the later update, looks to be more popular. One of the key reasons for the growth in popularity is the amount of Windows 8.1 convertibles available.

These convertibles offer a form factor the user can change, depending on the app. Most have a detachable keyboard, touchscreen and kickstand, allowing users to be productive and use the laptop like a tablet.
HP, Toshiba and E-FUN have taken Windows 8.1 another step into the tablet world, offering tablets for $100. The tablets cannot run PC games and will struggle with apps like Photoshop and FL Studio, but work fine as a regular tablet.
Users are able to use Skype, Internet Explorer 11, access Office 365 and can even play some Xbox games. The tablets work like regular Android tablets in regards to mobile apps and services, meaning users can watch Netflix and play Clash of Clans without any issues.
The HP Stream 7 is an excellent tablet for $99.99. It offers a 7-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display and offers 32GB of internal storage. Like all Windows tablets, users are complemented with an additional 15GB of OneDrive storage.
Toshiba's Encore Mini is a less attractive option, at the same $99.99 price. The resolution drops to 1024 x 600 and comes with 16GB of internal storage. Toshiba and HP are both known for rather adequate performance.
There are plenty of excellent Windows 8.1 choices in the $300 to $800 price range. The Acer Aspire S7 and S3 both offer top-class performance and design for their respective prices, and other providers like Dell, Lenovo and ASUS.
