Google's ‘LiftWare’ Smart Spoons Assist People with Parkinson’s

Google recently unveiled a smart spoon technology called "LiftWare".

Originally developed by health tech company Lift Labs that Google acquired last September, LiftWare helps people afflicted by Parkinson's disease and similar illnesses keep their hands steady while eating.

According to Lift Labs' official website, the new technology, also called a stabilizer, aims to improve the quality of life and independence among people suffering for Parkinson's disease and essential tremors.

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that affects more than 10 million people around the world.

Its symptoms are mostly related to movement and include shaking, rigidity and slow movement.

The disease has no specific known cause. A number of cases attribute Parkinson's to genetic or environmental factors.

The LiftWare spoon uses "tremor cancelling" sensor technology to detect hand movements. It then uses onboard motor technology to steady hand movements and keep it balanced.

Reports claim the new smart spoon was able to decrease shaking of the spoon's bowl by 76 percent during trials.

Jill Ostrem, a neurologist from the University of California's San Francisco Medical Center, contributed to the development of the device. He said the new device has helped some of his patients.
