A suicide bomber targeted and attacked a British Embassy vehicle located at the eastern part of Afghanistan's capital on Thursday morning resulting to six people killed including a British national and leaving more than thirty injured, law enforcement officials confirmed.
On the same day, a suicide bomber together with two gunmen also attacked a foreign guesthouse located near the compound of the International Relief and Development Organization based in Arlington.
The bomber reportedly detonated his explosives near the guesthouse while the gunmen tried to enter the compound. The compound is said to be home to embassies such as humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organizations.
The guards of the compound shot back and were successful in driving the gunmen away. Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Ayub Salangi told reporters that one of the gunmen was killed and one guard was injured. From the suicide bombing, no foreigner has been killed or injured and they were reportedly evacuated after the attack.
According to reports, the Taliban Islamist extremists are the ones responsible for the attacks as they have also claimed accountability for the bombings and the killings. They also announced that they were responsible for the other bombings in the past weeks.
The attacks are said to be due to the crucial developments that Afghanistan's government is implementing. The parliament of the country just disclosed this week the signing of a bilateral security agreement (BSA) that would allow U.S. and other international troops to remain in the area after the end of the year.
Next week, President Ashraf Ghani is set to travel to London for a donor conference. He aims to ask for financial aid that would amount to billions of dollars for the development their country and improvement of their economic state.
According to the Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, the Taliban wants to show that security is not welcome despite the BSA being signed and passed.
"They want to show their presence. They want to demonstrate they have the strength to do this," Sediqqi said. "Unfortunately, this winter they will try more of these attacks, and especially Kabul will be more a focus."
