Sony Corporation has unveiled the Cyber-shot RX100 III, its latest high-end point-and-shoot camera that introduces major tech refinements over its predecessors. The compact pocket camera will hit retail shelves in June.

The Cyber-shot RX100 III is being described as the most premium pocketable compact from Sony. At its core is a 1 inch CMOS sensor and a 24-70mm equivalent f/1.8-f/2.8 Zeiss lens that produces sharp images even in low light. The Mark III runs on Sony's powerful BIONZ X processor.

It differs from its two RX100 predecessors, which were both lavishly praised, by having a built-in and retractable OLED viewfinder with the same Zeiss T coating as the camera's lens to reduce flare and ghosting. It also features built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for wireless image sharing and camera control via smartphone.

The high quality lens was improved further. The new 24-70 mm (equivalent 35 mm), f/1.8-f/2.8 lens allows a wider angle of view and better bokeh, or the visual quality of the blurred or out-of-focus areas of a photographic image produced by a particular lens. The wide aperture results in faster shutter speeds for clear pictures of moving objects.

The Mark III comes with video-recording capabilities. Its BIONZ X processor gives it the capability to record two videos at once: one a high-definition XAVC-S video at 50 Mb/s supporting frame rates of up to 120fp  for editing and the another an MP4 video for sharing over Wi-Fi.

The retractable electronic viewfinder comes with a 1.44 million dot resolution and is the most talked about feature of the camera, said Sony. The viewfinder easily pops in and out of the camera's body. It has a ZEISS T*-coated eyepiece lens to help reduce reflections and provide clearer viewing. The pop-up EVF is probably the first on any high-end pocket camera

The camera has a selfie-friendly 180 degree tilting LCD display and an image stabilization system that uses 5-axis compensation to reduce the effects of camera shake.

The first Cyber-shot RX100 was widely praised when it was released in 2012. Its market success led to the creation of the high-end point-and-shoot camera.

Patrick Huang, director of Sony's Cyber-shot division said that with the new RX100 III, Sony has added a brighter, wider aperture lens and an impressive retractable OLED EVF, while also utilizing the latest Sony imaging technologies to boost the camera's processing speed and efficiency.
