A Taiwanese mobile phone advertisement with a gay twist story has gone viral in China garnering more than 700,000 views since it was first uploaded on YouTube in early May.
The advertisement for ZenFone runs for 3 minutes showing a typical boy-meets-girl scene. But the plot takes on a gay twist when the lead male character finds out that his male friend has hidden feelings for him.

The guy gave a girl a poem he wrote while his best friend was taking photographs of them from a distance. The guy and the girl fell in love a few days after. The three of them went out happily and shot group photos.
The plot then takes on a surprise twist when the guy finds out that his male friend has secret feelings for him. This was after he found a lot of pictures tucked stealthily behind their closet.
The group pictures which supposedly have the three of them together were edited to remove all images of the girl using the smartphone's delete feature. The guy remembered having couple photos taken but was surprised to see only his image in the pictures.
Given the stiff competition faced by smartphone vendors in the Chinese market, the Taiwanese company, Asus, had to find a way to grab consumers' attention, which it did with the gay ad. It remains to be seen, however, if the attention would translate into actual sales and a large market share.
The smartphone ad was launched late in April but only went viral in China from May 12. The ad was reported to have been seen in Greater China’s major online forums.
