All computers connected to Sony Pictures' network displayed a warning message from the hackers, who identified themselves as the Guardians of Peace or GOP.
Apart from shutting-down Sony's worldwide business, GOP also threatened to reveal Sony's top secret internal data, including passwords and financial reports.
Reports said GOP threatened to reveal all the classified information it stole unless unspecified demands were met by a certain deadline. The deadline has passed and GOP has revealed no information.
Security analysts aren't sure if Sony Pictures succeeded in containing the security breach. Sony Pictures has kept mum about this massive security breach,
The hacking resulted in hackers controlling most of Sony Pictures' computer systems as well as several accounts of their different social media outlets such as Twitter.
To prove they were responsible for the hack, GOP released digital documents they claim to have stolen from Sony Pictures. Leaked files included scanned images of the passports of several famous actors such as Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Jonah Hill.
A Sony spokesperson released a statement saying the issue is now being fixed by technical staff and that they're investigating the situation.
The company hasn't officially recognized the success of the hack but GOP still leaks stolen files said to be private and protected.
