Hong Kong actor Wong Cho Lam, after left and right criticisms about his marriage proposal to actress Leanne Li at the TVB Anniversary Gala, has denied that he popped the question to his girlfriend during the event in order to boost ratings.

During the 2014 edition of the TVB Anniversary Gala, Wong reportedly proposed to his girlfriend, Li, on live TV, surprising the actress. However, the couple and the network have been criticized about the authenticity of its 'surprise' nature, citing that the Li has discussed wedding plans prior to the event.

Rumor has then surfaced that Wong and Li were used by TVB in order to increase the ratings or viewership. In addition, it is said that it was a tactic used by TVB to win against HKTV since the release of the rival company's drama 'The Election' which had been a hit to the public.

Many have cited that Li and Wong have long been engaged and that the actress merely faked her shock during the event.

However, Wong, who attended the premiere of the film 'Rise of the Legend', denied the claims, swearing that he has never proposed to Li prior to the TVB Anniversary Gala.

He further stated that the people who said such things about him and Li were not knowledgeable about getting married and didn't know anything about being engaged. "You don't propose first and talk about getting married later," Wong stated.

Furthermore, he claimed that he and Li have been discussing marriage throughout their relationship which had been long before he has proposed to her.

He explained that despite having wedding plans, there is still the necessity to ask Li's parents' for their blessings. "While a woman knows that she is in it for the long haul, she would still want to know how her man would propose," the actor told reporters.

As for the venue of their wedding, Wong stated that he has booked Disneyland as the venue for their wedding banquet, and by that time, he has already received Li's parents' blessings.

He emphasized that everything has been set before the Gala except for the proposal.
