"Just yesterday, I was performing in the midst of my concert tour in China, and today I am standing here in Los Angeles at the AMA.I feel like I am living a dream!" Zhang said while accepting his award.
Chinese duo, Xiao Yang and Wang Taili, together known as the Chopstick Brothers, also won Favorite International Song in AMAs with their online viral hit song "Xiao Pingguo" ("Little Apple").
Some people online disclosed that the American awards were totally purchased because Zhang and Chopstick Brothers performed in the Ads break and accepted the awards in the backstage. But Mark Rafalowski, the executive vice-president of the international department of Dick Clark Productions, organizer of AMA, denied the disclosure. He said that the show time was very tight.
"AMA has 40-year history. Do you think we would do this thing? For each award, we are very serious. The thing of purchasing an award does not exist." Rafalowski said with angry tone at the beginning and repeatedly denied the disclosure of purchasing awards.
Rafalowski said that "We saw that Zhang Jie's MV hits and discussion hits are extremely high in China. We thought he is just like Chinese Taylor Swift, so we decided to invite Zhang Jie to AMA."
Rafalowski also explained that AMA hoped to attract more international audience through awarding to international artists.
Zhang feels very clam with the controversy, "The trip to AMA was very fun."
Zhang also responded to the online controversy. "I feel very distressed for my fans and the people support me. I also care the people with different voices on the internet. I think I have occupied their time and thank them for giving me the time," said Zhang.
