Golfer Rory McIlroy confirms it’s officially over between him and Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, just days after sending out wedding invitations to their guests.

McIlroy talked about ending the engagement a few hours after announcing he parted ways with Wozniacki. The announcement also came prior to the BMW PGA Championship.

The golfer said that he and Caroline were facing tough times and that the decision to call off the engagement was mutual. He said the statement released on Wednesday morning says it all, adding that calling off the engagement would be the best for both of them.

The 25 year old golfer said it was time to move on and that he already said all he needed to say.

McIlroy and Wozniacki started dating in 2011 and got engaged in Australia on New Year’s Eve.

Many were taken by surprise over the split-up because McIlroy recently said he was delighted to meet Wozniacki in London. The two met after the Players Championship where Wozniacki was set to play in an event in Rome. Caroline even withdrew from the game to be able to meet up with McIlroy.

British newspaper Telegraph quoted McIlroy saying he realized he wasn’t ready for marriage as soon as their wedding invitations were sent out over the weekend. He also admitted that the problem was on his part. He wished Caroline happiness and thanked her for the time they’ve spent together.

McIIroy admitted he is no different from anyone else, pointing out that he has been through breakups like everyone else. He said calling off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki was a very difficult move.

The golfer had decided to focus on his upcoming tournament and told the press he would answer further questions regarding golf.
