Nintendo is showing renewed interest in bringing its classic retro games back to life and reviving it on mobile devices.

A Nintendo patent describes a technology that will emulate mobile game consoles such as the iconic Game Boy in mobile phones and other digital devices. The patent also details the emulation of games for the Game Boy in unique settings such as the backs of plane seats, trains and buses.

Emulation has been popular among gamers for years but a lot of it is illegal. Emulators for older game consoles are installed on a user's computer or mobile device so the gamer can play classic games.

It allows players to play old games without using old consoles and cartridges. Nintendo even allows gamers to download older games into their newer devices such as Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said Nintendo has been very hesitant in offering its classic games and introducing them to non-Nintendo platforms since this could influence players into not buying Nintendo game consoles.

Iwata also adds many have been saying Nintendo's software assets for smart devices can further expand the company's business. He doesn't believe this move can show how good Nintendo is in integrating its hardware and software. He said it will be difficult sustaining this business model in the long-term.

In response to this, however, Nintendo will release a mobile device app to sustain consumer interest in Nintendo entertainment. Iwata teases this app will feature some games that will make long time fans and new users support Nintendo platforms in the long run.

To date, Nintendo has been developing and exploring new lifestyle products, called "quality of life" products, including a bedside sleep sensor. This sleep sensor monitors fatigue and stress signals to track sleep patterns. This data will then help users form healthier sleeping habits.
