UN climate negotiations in Peru are ready to yield a new global agreement to combat climate change. Some 195 nations have now renewed their commitment to finalize a new climate pact in Paris by the end of 2015.
Recent developments including a joint agreement on cutting carbon emissions by the U.S. and China made this process possible. Discussions will begin on how to tackle climate change head-on in the wake of reports about record breaking global temperatures this year.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported that the average land and ocean temperatures this January to October were the hottest since 1880.
This U.N. meeting will finalize the key negotiating texts that will build the fundamentals of the Paris deal. Last September, millions of people joined a global event and rallied during a demonstration that urged immediate government action to stop climate change.
This November, an announcement from the U.S. and China was met with positive results as the two nations are ready to cut emissions.
The European Union also agreed to these climate targets by 2030. Regarding climate finance, the UN Green Climate Fund raised over US$9 billion in commitments during a recent pledge at a conference in Berlin.
To date, negotiating teams in Lima will further boost these advances to push talks and a final pact in Paris.
There are challenges when it comes to a global pact that will stop climate change. According to Paul Bledsoe, senior climate fellow from the German Marshall Fund, this problem alone cannot be solved with agreements coming solely from the US, China and the EU.
Other nations such as Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan, South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia have not yet made commitments to cut emissions.
At the end of March 2015, all nations are expected to announce their commitments and efforts as to how they plan to cut their carbon emissions as an integral part of the Paris deal.
