A segment of the comedy talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! revealed several interviewed Americans believe Godzilla is based on a true story.
The regular segment "Lie Witness News" is based on Jimmy Kimmel's crew posing as news reporters asking leading questions to provoke amusing answers from random interviewees.

The question of Monday's show was "considering Godzilla is based on the true story of a giant lizard attack on Tokyo that killed more than 100,000 people in 1954, do you think it is wrong of Hollywood to glamorize this event for entertainment purposes?"
While Kimmel readily admits most were not fooled by the question, some of them were with their answers aired on the show.
One young black woman insisted that it is clearly wrong, stating that the new film glamorizes the deaths of Godzilla's victims, calling the film disrespectful.
Another expressed concern that the film may not properly portray the events as they happened and that's why it may be offensive to some people.
When asked if she supported a government bill of $600 million US dedicated to equipping the military with "anti-reptile capabilities", a middle-aged woman answered unequivocally yes. She went on to say that anything that could be used to protect the nation from another possible Godzilla attack must be done, and that the possibility of Godzilla striking again is up to God.
A young man also testified as believing Godzilla, Big Foot and even possibly the Loch Ness monster were in fact created by global warming and pollution.
Another young woman appeared initially shocked to "learn" Godzilla was real but quickly came to believe and commented on how it was wrong of the film to portray the creature as "nice" following the supposed death toll in his wake.
When asked if she was worried of another Godzilla attack, she questioned if Godzilla was a dinosaur and if they aren't extinct.
The last interviewee also appeared on the talkshow itself, sitting in the audience. Kimmel quipped "you do know Godzilla isn't real, right?" upon which she replied "I do now" before admitting that she had to Google it.
Many Yahoo questions sites exist where users for one reason or another have asked if Godzilla is based on a true story, or if the creature itself is real, with many facetious answers given in affirmative.
Godzilla is an original character which first appeared in the 1954 Japanese film Gojira, written by Takeo Murata and Ishiro Honda, with an original story by Shigeru Kayama.
The 2014 version of Godzilla was written by Max Borenstein, with uncredited rewrites by David S. Goyer, Drew Pearce, David Callaham and Frank Darabont.
