Detroit Gets Power Back After Massive Outage

Another Detroit Black Out

(Photo : REUTERS/Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports) The lights are out during a power outage during game three of the American League Championship Series baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park.

The power is finally back in Detroit at 5:15 p.m. today after an outage that lasted 7 hours. Electricity was pumped back to police and fire stations, government offices, hospital, schools, and traffic lights following a major cable failure that left the city immobile.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan confirmed that the power grid in his city is still far from being modernized and has remained stagnant in the last few decades. This is an aftermath of the city's economic situation, with Detroit holding the biggest recorded city bankruptcy in the entire history of the United States.

The power outage left major establishments and offices paralyzed and in chaos. Many people moved out of the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice via the stairs, while offices like the Wayne State and the Detroit Institute of Arts were not able to perform their expected tasks because of the power interference.

Lt. Brian Earle from the office of the Wayne County Sheriff stated that evacuation had to be done at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. He also confirmed that the 1,200 inmates in Wayne County Jail had to be locked down until the outage ended.

Schools suspended classes mid-day to send children home and ascertain their safety. Some medical centers in Detroit began sending high trauma level patients to neighboring hospitals not affected by the outage in order to secure their safety and health.

Even the continuing murder hearing of Bob Bashara had to be stopped when lights started flickering on and off at the Hall of Justice. Bashara is under trial after his previous assistant Joseph Gentz accused him of calling the hit for his wife's murder, Jane Bashara.

The Detroit Fire Department began receiving calls at10:30 a.m. about outages affecting people's areas. The city's  power grid returned to its normal operations later in the afternoon and is expected to stabilize from there.
