A woman, who has been in coma since March of this year, successfully gave birth to a healthy baby boy Thursday morning at the UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, California, local media reported.

Melissa Carleton Lande has been in coma following a brain tumor surgery but brought her baby to full term. On Thursday, doctors delivered West Nathaniel, who weighed five pounds nine ounces at birth, via C-section.

The delivery of the baby boy was closely monitored by the local media because until the boy was born, physicians were unsure if the infant or Melissa would survive the pregnancy.

"West Nathaniel got his mom's nose and ears," said Melissa's husband Brian Lande. Brian is the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Deputy.

Brian admitted that his circumstances are far from those faced by ordinary fathers, although he was clearly overwhelmed and overjoyed as he held his newborn son. After the birth of West Nathaniel, Brian said he know thinks of what's next for his wife's treatment.

"I am happy to see my son but it is very painful that my wife is not awake with me for this," said Brian.

Last March, Melissa had a seizure while being treated for a benign brain tumor. Doctors said her brain injury is in the area that controls wakefulness, so they said it may be possible that she was aware during the delivery and of what is going on around her.

Before she was brought to the operating room for the surgery last March, Melissa held Brian's hand and placed it to her stomach. Brian said he felt the baby kicking inside her.

Last Thursday, the proud father thanked the community for extending help as he admitted that the continued care and treatment of his wife will be very expensive.

"I am focused on keeping Melissa and baby West together," Brian said.
