"I am extremely grateful that Major League Baseball has always judged me on my work and nothing else and that's the way it should be," Scott told Outsports editor Jim Buzinski.
Apart from making history by being the first openly gay official in a major sport, Scott already has a special place in Yankee history as he was the last umpire to eject fiery manager Billy Martin from a game.
Scott tossed out Martin from a May 30, 1988 game against the Oakland A' after the manager argued a call. Martin was suspended for three games after he kicked and threw dirt at Scott.
After that, principal owner and managing partner of the MLB's New York Yankees fired Scott.
With regards to his partner, Scott has never made a public announcement about his sexuality or sexual orientation. However, Outsports reports that he never hid his orientation or his 28-year relationship with partner Michale Rausch.
"The first 10 years of my Major League umpire career, I would have been horrified if a story had come out that I was gay," Scott told Outsports. "But guys unprovoked started to approach me and say, 'I just want you to know that I would walk on the field with you any day, you're a great guy, a great umpire and I couldn't care less about your personal life."
Scott finally decided to take a more public stand after journalist Peter Jeckel of Referee magazine began work on a story about his 29 years as an MLB empire.
