There have been numerous reports 100 human brains stored in the basement of the University of Texas went missing over the decade. These brains were collected in 1986 from the Austin State Hospital, more infamously known as the "Texas State Lunatic Asylum."
The missing brains are stored in jars filled with formaldehyde at the university's Animal Resource Center. They were used by the Department of Psychology for research and to study and match known behaviors and medical disorder related to the human brain.

Students from the university used the brains to study about disorders such Parkinson's disease, depression, Huntington's disease, among others.
The mystery of the missing brains appeared to have been solved this week.
An Austin professor told reporters these organs were sent to University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), a claim the university contested. On the other hand, UTSA said the brains might have been sent to a different facility, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
UTSA later released a statement saying the missing brains were destroyed and disposed in accordance with protocols governing biological waste. It is said faculty members found out some of these brains were no longer suitable for research and teaching.
"This occurred prior to the renovation of the Animal Resources Center, where the specimens had been stored in a secure location," said UTSA.
