President Xi Speaks on How to Establish Regional Security

No country should seek to establish security solely for itself at the expense of other countries’ security, said Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
Having one country or a handful of countries attain security while others are left unsure is likewise not acceptable, the president added during the speech he delivered at the opening ceremony of fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

To drive his point and issue a warning the president quoted the Kazakh proverb: “One who tries to blow other’s oil lamp will get his beard on fire.”
Xi urged that efforts be exerted to establish common security in Asia. The president added that countries in Asia have shared interests and desires for security that will make them unite through good and bad times to become a group of nations with a common goal.
Common security, according to the president entails showing respect for and ensuring the security of all countries in the region. To strengthen a military partnership aimed at a third party is not favorable to the establishment of common security, Xi added.
Xi also mentioned the need for equal security for each country in Asia, saying the each and every country in the region has the right to take part in security affairs in the region and likewise has the responsibility to maintain the region’s security.
No country should be try to rule over the security affairs of the region or violate the interests and rights of other countries, Xi said.
Security must include every single country in the region and that the differences that exists among Asian countries should not be seen as a deterrent but as a driving force towards the establishment of security cooperation in the region.
Basic laws on international affairs and relations like respecting a nation’s sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity must be followed, the president said.
Legitimate and valid security concerns of each nation should be respected and settled, Xi added.
