Europe's Extremely Large Telescope On Track For 2024 Launch

Being able to see nearby galaxies, stars and Earth-like planets is big on scientists agenda in the next few years, alongside getting people on Mars.

To make sure scientists have accurate information through telescopes, the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Extremely Large Telescope has been approved and will start development in Chile this year.

The Extremely Large Telescope features an insane 39-meter aperture, the largest out of the three huge telescopes being built in the next decade.

The project - backed by a few countries in Europe - has been in limbo for two years. Poland recently agreed to fund the extra amount, tolling up to 90 percent, enough for ESO to start building.

ESO projects the build will be finished by 2024 and will cost €1 billion ($1.24 billion) to create. The ten year build will mostly be on the telescope and making sure everything it set up correctly for scientists.

The project will be based in Chile's Atacama Desert, a smart place for scientists to get a good view at the solar system.

It is unclear exactly how long it will take for the project to be 100 percent, considering ESO currently only have 90 percent of funds. Brazil may be interested to funding the telescope at a later date.

Two of the other big telescope projects include the Giant Magellan Telescope, with a 24-meter aperture and the Thirty Meter Telescope, with a 30-meter aperture. The European funded Extremely Large Telescope will be finished four years after the Thirty Meter Telescope.

Telescopes are used for various data analysis on planets and provide scientists with an overview of the planet, before they are able to send roamers or satellites. Different moons and meteors are always being looked at as potential spots for life and growth.
