Sony is celebrating twenty years of PlayStation in style, by releasing a limited edition version of the PS4, using the primary colors of the original PS1.

The original PS1 was released in Japan on Dec. 3 1994, starting the PlayStation brand. At the time, the PS1 was marvelled for its CD-ROM drive, capable of offering more on the disc than Nintendo's cartridge-based console.

It took Sony a few months before the PS1 was available in North America and a few more before it was available in Europe. The console quickly caught the attention of video game studios, creating classics like Final Fantasy, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot and Resident Evil.

The game brought a milestone in graphics and game size, offering more than the typical platformer and adventure games of old. Sony quickly became one of the most notable brands in video games.

The PS1 is sometimes overshadowed by the massive success the PS2 had worldwide, selling over 155 million units. It is noted as one of the best selling video game consoles of all time and is Sony's most successful console.

In the previous console generation, the PS3 went a little quiet due to the success of the Xbox 360. The move to IBM cell technology lead to a huge console at launch and Sony trimmed away the fat over the decade.

Sony's PlayStation brand has also moved into portable consoles with the PSP and PS Vita, and gaming networks like PlayStation Network and PlayStation Now. It has become a core part of Sony's identity to gaming fans.

The new limited edition PS4 reminds us of the traditional grey-ish plastic used on the PS1 and the traditional PS logo. It is an excellent console for any big fans of PlayStation.

PlayStation fans have been showing off their favorite games or consoles, alongside executives thanking the customers for keeping the video game system alive.

The PS4 has brought back Sony's success in the console market, selling 15 million units already and well on track to hit the same figures the PS3 and PS1 did, although it will take some pushing to beat the 155 million record set by the PS2.
