Famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking relies on a computer-based communications system to communicate since he's unable to talk because of a motor neuron disease. Despite his reliance on technology, Hawking issued a strong warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) that he believes might cause the demise of mankind.

He said current AI developments will ultimately produce thinking machines that will threaten the existence of humankind. Hawking made this grave warning when asked about the recent upgrade of his communications systems.

The renowned scientist suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) that forces him to use a computer controlled system to speak. His new upgrade was provided by Intel and Swiftkey. Hawking's famous robotic voice is generated by the system and even predicts what Hawking will say next.

Hawking certainly doesn't deny the benefits of AI and acknowledges the AI he used for the past 20 years proved very useful. He believes, however, that further development and fine tuning of AI technology may have negative effects on the human race.

He says AI can become independent of human control and can re-design itself at an unprecedented rate. Since humans are slow to evolve and limited to biological processes, humans will no longer compete with AI robots and will become obsolete.

This isn't the first time Hawking voiced his apprehension about the advance of AI. He also enumerated seven effects of AI advancements and detailed the negative consequences they can produce.

He provides examples such as outsmarting financial markets and even manipulating human world and industry leaders. On a more terrifying note, AI machines could produce weapons even humans can't comprehend.

Hawking isn't the only person warning the public about super intelligent AIs that can wipe out the human race. Last month, SpaceX founder Elon Musk revealed his fears about AI and how this technology can lead to humankind's impending doom.
