X-Men: Days Of Future Past Crushes Godzilla In US Box Office

X-Men: Days of Future Past took the top spot over the Memorial Day Weekend from Godzilla after taking an estimated earnings of $91 million.

The new X-Men movie has been expected to hit more than $110 million during the Memorial Day weekend. This caused Godzilla to step down after holding the top spot last week.

British director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla has recorded earnings of $31.4 million. This brought Godzilla to a total of $149 million in the US box office after its first day of release in the country.

Meanwhile, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s tag team in “Blended” took the third spot at the US box office. Sandler and Barrymore’s reunion on the big screen earned a disappointing $14.2 million. This was the third time that the two starred in a film.

The fourth spot was taken by comedy movie “Neighbors” starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen. Neighbors took $14 million while Spider-Man 2 took the fifth spot with $8 million during its fourth weekend after its first day release.

X-Men director Bryan Singer has been confronted with claims against series of sexual assaults. This has caused fears that the movie would slump on the box office. However, this was disputed after X-Men: Days of Future Past was marked by its earnings to be the fifth largest over the Memorial Day weekend.

The movie maker denied the allegations regarding the sexual assault claims and even refused any interviews for the new X-Men movie.

Paul Dergarabedian an analyst at Rentrak box-office tracker said that outside situations rarely cause impacts on the box office. He also added that movie fans care about the movie rather than the movie makers.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a sequel to the 2011 X-men movie where Wolverine was sent to the future from 1973 to save the future of mutants.
