Australian Open Champ Wawrinka Out in First Round of French Open

After gaining major victories at this year's Australian Open, Stan Wawrinka experienced defeat Monday at the 2014 French Open.

Just a few days earlier, the Swiss champion proclaimed himself as "one of the favorties" and was slotted as No. 3, coming in behind Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However within the first two days Wawrinka experienced major upsets losing in the first round with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 to 41st-ranked Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

Wawrinka is the first Australian Open champ to be eliminated in the first round of the French Open since Petr Korda in 1998.

When asked about the defeat, the tennis player said he tried to find his game but just didn't, adding that his trademark one-handed backhand had fallen "flat" during the match.

At the Australian Open this year, Wawrinka nabbed his first Grand Slam title after beating Spanish tennis champ Rafael Nadal, and sealed his status as a top contender by beating Swiss player Roger Federer in the Monte Carlo final.

His loss at the French Open means another year will go by without a tennis player snaring the both the Australian Open and French Open titles in the same year, the last athlete to achieve this double feat was Jim Courier in 1992.

With Wawrinka out of the mix, Nadal and Serbian pro Novak Djokovic appear to be the top two contenders for the title.

Nadal has already won a record eight French Open titles, but if he carries the big win this year he will become the first man to win five times in a row in Paris.

Djokovic, who beat Joao Sousa of Portugal with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, can complete a career Grand Slam if he takes the French Open title this time around.
