All IT products and services as well as suppliers of information systems associated with national security and the public’s interest will now be subject to review.
Domestic and foreign companies that do not pass the requirements of the review will be banned from selling their products and services in China.
The implementation of this new policy aimed at safeguarding cybersecurity appears to be a response to the increasing threats China has been facing relating to cybersecurity.
China being the worlds biggest market for computers, telecommunication and Internet services is one of the world’s foremost victims of cybersecurity.
According to a Chinese cybersecurity monitoring group, 50,000 backdoor attacks targeting Chinese computers coming from over 2,000 US Internet protocol addresses were launched during the last two months. This makes the US the major source of cyber attacks on Chinese computers.
A report published in the New York Times on Wednesday said that the US National Security Agency had successfully hacked into the computer of certain global companies including China Telecom and Huawei Technologies, which is the world’s biggest telecoms company.
In October last year, Edward Snowden a former NSA contractor disclosed information about the US government’s use of its diplomatic missions in over 80 location including Beijing to gather information from telephones and computer networks.
Analysts seem to be one in saying that the review that the government will be instituting is an absolute necessity to safeguard national security and public interest.
Wang Jun, chief engineer at the China Information Technology Security Evaluation Center said that the review might be a driving force for Chinese technology and network companies to enhance the quality of their products and upgrade service security.
Wang added, that many countries have already implemented similar reviews.
