Scientists claim they've developed the world's first ever software that can measure how people express their emotions online.

They say their online gauge can detect 24 specific emotions ranging from trust to terror and admiration to rage. These online emotions are manifested through 60,000 news sources, including social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

The software was specifically designed to help companies determine what exactly the public thinks or feels about their brands and products. For business firms, the software can provide insights to improve their brands and outshine their competition.

Belfast-based tech start-up Adoreboard developed this software with support from Belfast's Queen University.

Upon entering a specific brand name, the software generates an "Adorescore" with an index rating of negative 100 to 100 that illustrates the public perception of the brand.

According to Chris Johnston, founder of Adoreboard, this type of technology can revolutionize how businesses improve their customer relations. He adds that brands spend billions of dollars every year to influence how people feel when they see their brand or product.

This software is a metric to understand the impact of brands on consumers. Adoreboard's primary aim is to measure what really matters for consumers based on the human factor of their online emotions.

This technology can simplify communicating by studying complex data that allows emotional online pulses to be translated into how people communicate in real life, according to Adoreboard's chief technology officer Fergal Monaghan.

Amazon and Microsoft have allowed Adoreboard to use their free server space because of the sheer massive amount of data Adoreboard's analyzing.

Johnston adds this is the best opportunity to change how brands communicate with customers by obtaining incredible hindsight and foresight.

Adoreboard won an award as Best Tech Start-up during the Silicon Valley Global Technology Summit.
