Brazilian Health Inspectors Confiscate 218 Kgs of Inedible Food from World Cup Venues

Brazilian health and safety officials confiscated expired food from a hotel west of Rio which is due to host teams for the World Cup.

The Portobello Hotel, which was to serve as a temporary residence for the Italian football team for the duration of the World Cup, was reportedly keeping over 50 kgs of food considered unfit for consumption.

Officials stated that around 25 kgs of the food, which included meat, seafood, and pasta, were past their expiration dates. All the food was later discarded.

Reportedly, the hotel has up to 15 days to explain to the consumer protection organization why they were harboring unfit food, the organization will then determine what sanctions, if any, will be taken against the Portobello Hotel.

The hotel was only one of 13 venues, which included restaurants, bakeries, and hotels, to be visited by authorities. Out of the 13, eight were reported to be exhibiting irregularities.

In total, officials confiscated and discarded 218 kgs of food.

The raids are all a part of a last-minute scramble by the country to prepare for the 2014 World Cup which will take off next month.

Last week, Brazil made moves to upgrade the nation's notoriously overcrowded and run-down airports in an attempt to prep for the large influx of people who will be traveling to Brazil from around the globe in June.

Concerns have been raised over Brazil's shabby infrastructure and the government's slow response to dealing with ongoing issues.

Transportation is another concern to plague the nation as there is currently no viable railway system and participants in the World Cup will be left to travel between the 12 host cities via air.

The situation has further caused people to question Brazil's ability to prepare for the Olympics which the country will be hosting in 2016.
