Joaquin Phoenix Was Joking When He Told David Letterman He Was Engaged

Ok. So Joaquin Phoenix was just joking after all when he told David Letterman that he's going to get married.

The Oscar-winning actor admitted on two morning shows Tuesday that what he told host David Letterman on his late night show that he was already engaged to a yoga instructor was not actually true.

"I did not play a prank on him; he knew that I was joking around," Phoenix told Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on the morning show, Live! With Kelly & Michael.

A rather curious Ripa persisted in asking Phoenix: "But you said that you were engaged to your yoga instructor?"

A cheerful Phoenix said he can't remember saying that.

"I didn't see the show; I have no idea what I said," the actor continued.

An amused Strahan eventually clarified if Phoenix even does yoga, to which he said: "No, I don't."

The Walk the Line actor earlier appeared on Good Morning America, explaining before George Stephanopoulos that his life is kinda "boring," and he wanted to sizzle it up a bit that's why he told Letterman that he'd been engaged.

"And, like, I just want the audience to like me and they really like people that are getting married. So I just -- I thought I would say I was getting married!" he said.

Stephanopoulos then asked if Phoenix would "bum out our audience here on 'GMA' and tell them you're not getting married?"

Phoenix responded: "I can get engaged again, if you'd like!"

The actor, who also got nominated for two more Oscars for Gladiator and The Master, narrated to Letterman that he got injured while doing yoga with his instructor, although Letterman doubted the bizarre actor's claim.

"This is the crazy part of the story: We started dating," he then told him.

"And I think she's the one. I proposed to her and she said yes," he continued.

Whatever happened to Joaquin Phoenix?
