Catcher Miguel Montero was recently signed by Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs acquired him from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for two minor leaguers on Tuesday.

The Cubs traded away right-handed pitchers Jeferson Mejia and Zack Godley to the Diamondbacks in exchange for the catcher, Montero.

Mejia went 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 12 games for the Cubs' rookie league affiliate in Mesa.

Godley on the other hand was 4-3 with 15 saves and a 3.09 ERA in 40 appearances for Chicago's Class A affiliates in Kane County and Daytona.

At only 31-years old, he is a .264 career hitter with a .763 on-base plus slugging (OPS) over parts of nine seasons in Arizona. In 2011 and 2014, he was part of the National League All-star team.

Currently, he is in the middle of a US $60 million contract and has $40 million owed to him over the next three seasons.

The Montero trade is yet another move that marks how busy the Diamondbacks are this offseason. Apart from Montero, they acquired pitcher Jeremy Hellickson from Tampa Bay. They traded away Didi Gregorious to the New York Yankees.

They also signed outfielder Yasmany Tomas to a six-year $68.5 million contract as a free agent.

It is fortunate for Montero that the Cubs acquired him, as they recently hired former Arizona coach Henry Blanco. He will be able to continually mentor Montero on the defensive side during his transition phase to Chicago.

Montero has improved his pitch-framing last season and threw out almost 30 percent of runners who attempted to steal bases.

On the offensive side, Montero also offers an improvement for the Cubs. A left-handed hitter, he is ranked 21st in the majors with a .684 OPS last season.

Couple it with Welington Castillo's own batting - a righty bat who hit .301 with an .855 OPS against lefties in 2014 - and that makes the Cubs' offense a formidable one.
