The email that was sent to Sony Pictures threatened not only the company, but its employees and their families as well. It was supposedly sent by a group of people calling themselves the Guardians of Peace, or GOP for short.

According to Time Magazine, Sony Pictures Entertainment has issued an internal memo regarding the situation. The note said that what happened was "unprecedented in nature" and was a form of "unparalleled crime" that was committed by "an organized group," pertaining to GOP. Mandiant was the company that has been employed by Sony to perform the investigation and take care of the problem.

In a separate memo that was sent to the entire company, Sony CEO Michael Lynton assured employees that everything is being one in order to protect them from the threats made by the cyber criminals. The data that was supposedly stolen by the hackers, according toBusiness Insider, not only included their complete names, but other sensitive information as well, such as addresses and Social Security numbers.

In Lynton's memo, he said that, the Federal Bureau of Investigation "have dedicated their senior staff to this global investigation. He also assured the studio's employees that "recognized experts are working on this matter and looking out for our security." One of the first steps that the FBI will be taking care of, in response to these cybercrimes committed against Sony, is to visit the company's studio in Culver City and hold cybersecurity awareness briefings.
