Google's news product is not going to be available in Spain from now on, as the country's publishers would want charges from the tech giant each time they show snippets of their materials on their site.
According to Google News head Richard Gingras, Spain's new intellectual property law mandates every publication in the country to ask fees for services like Google News if they ever see even just a little snippet of content copied from their publication.

This new rule is something that the company cannot afford since its product does not really make any money off of it. There are no advertising deals on its news portal, so they just decided to shut it down in Spain.
Google will not just end it on December 16, but news from Spanish publications will not also be seen on the Google News' global portal.
According to Spain's new law, it is only right that they do it to secure the copyright of their publishers and writers in the digital world, so they would receive proper compensation from people who use parts of their materials in the news and other scene involving publishing.
Although the Internet has opened a lot of doors in the news writing industry, it was also quite a struggle for publishers to gain readers' attention and advertising Euros increase due to the many competitions involved around the net, Gingras said.
Meanwhile, Germany-based publishers who want to get paid for republishing their materials retreated after learning that Google opt to stop the visibility of news snippets and thumbnails for one of their major news sites from the search results page.
In a statement, Germany's publishers said Google's power to market their news is going to do well with their views, so they do not mind having the company show excerpts of their contents in its search results page without having to charge them.
