Since 2001, the number of red factories in Yiwu skyrocketed from 10 factories to more than 600 factories. They have produced 60 percent of Christmas decorations distributed internationally and 90 percent Christmas decorations distributed within China.
Based on the Yiwu Christmas Products Industry Association Vice-Chairman, Cai Qunglian's statement the recent status of the orders for Christmas decorations was considered not that good, but not that bad because while their orders decreased internationally, they increased locally.
An interview with one of the workers in the red factory revealed the real situation of the workers as well as their view about Christmas. Wei, a 19 years old factory worker said that he is aware of the existence of Christmas holiday but he does not have an idea what is it all about. However, he thinks that Christmas holiday is like a Chinese New Year for the foreigners.
Aside from Wei, his father also works in the factory to produce Christmas decorations. Their family went to Yiwu with a hope to earn more money. A friend of them told them that there is a work in Yiwu that can help them earn up to 4,000 RMB.
The factory workers need to work for 10 hours producing different Christmas decorations to earn 3,000 RMB per month. They need to use 10 facial masks each day so they won't breathe in the red powder being used in the production and although the workers attire may give you vibes of Christmas, they did not wear those clothes to celebrate Christmas, they wear a Christmas hat and cover themselves head to toe to protect themselves from red dust.
As for Wei and his father, they are planning to go home once they have saved enough money for Wei's wedding and may not return again because for them the work is very tiring.
Christmas decorations do not only give life to our place during Christmas but it also serves as a source of living for some people in China.
