Gossip site TMZ reported that "New Girl" actress Zooey Deschanel is being sued by a horse owner who insisted that the star overworked a stallion that she leased from her.

Patty Parker, owner of the leased equine, shared that the 34-year old singer-actress overworked her show horse Literati so much so that the animal sustained very serious injuries. Parker claimed that when the actress returned the horse, it had sustained so much injuries that she had become "unusable".

The actress was said to have leased the horse in 2013 for US$13,000. In the lease contract, the actress guaranteed that she would not overwork the animal, which among other conditions, meant that Deschanel could do "'no more than three jumping lessons per week".

Unbeknownst to many, the actress is a hardcore equestrian, and regularly joins riding competitions.

However, Literati's owner insisted that the actress did not abide by the terms and conditions of the contract, saying that Literati had to get serious medical attention due to Deschanel's noncompliance.

Parker is seeking compensation from the actress for the high veterinary bills she had to shell out cash for.

The quirky comedic actress has yet to comment on the issue.

Currently, the actress has been playing the lead role on the Fox comedy series "New Girl," which is set to return on January 6.

The "50 Days of Summer" star is also returning to the big screen in 2015, with two flicks.

One of Deschanel's films is "Rock the Kasbah," which also stars Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Bruce Willis and Bill Murray. The flick, which is set to open in theaters on April 24, is produced by Deschanel's boyfriend, Jacob Pechenik.

She will also be starring in the dark comedy "The Driftless Area," which also stars Anton Yelchin, Aubrey Plaza John Hawkes, Ciaran Hinds and Alia Shawkat.
