A shocking turn of events in Lahore, Pakistan on Thursday revealed that the husband of a woman who was stoned to death by her own family killed his first wife four years earlier.

Earlier this week, 25-year-old Farzana Parveen was stoned to death by a mob of at least 20 family members who attacked her outside the courthouse and killed her for reportedly marrying the man she loved.

Initially, many offered their condolences to Parveen's husband, Mohammed Iqbal, who was present when her family carried out what they termed to be an 'honor killing'.

However, the deputy inspector general for Punjab police, Zulfiqar Hameed, told The Associated Press on Thursday that Iqbal had been arrested in 2009 for slaying his first wife, Ayesha Bibi.

The murder case against Iqbal was withdrawn after his former wife's family members forgave him, Hameed said.

Under Pakistani law, murder charges can be annulled if family members of the deceased agree to forgive the murderer or to accept "blood money" offerings over the crime.

According to Iqbal's children, he killed his wife during a dispute in 2009, but they later decided to forgive him and withdraw the criminal charges.

Both slayings have been looked upon as 'intolerable' by U.N. officials but Iqbal's son, Aurang Zeb, stated that the family didn't want to discuss what had happened in the past and claimed that his father was in a state of shock after the death of his second wife.

Mohammad Iqbal could not be immediately reached for a statement.

This scandalous revelation shows how dangerous life can be for women in the predominantly Muslim nation.

Pakistan reportedly has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world and in 2013 The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported that some 869 women were murdered in honor killings.
